Reviewing Your Resume
Contact Information
- Full name clearly visible at the top
- Professional email address
- Phone number included
- Customized LinkedIn URL (recommended)
Tailoring to Job Description
- Resume includes keywords from the job description
- Relevant experiences and skills are highlighted
- Resume appears customized for the role and company
Objective or Summary (Optional)
- Clear and concise statement of career goals
- Tailored to the specific role or industry
- Highlights key skills and experiences
Education
- University name and location listed
- Degree and major included
- Expected graduation date listed
- Relevant coursework included (if helpful)
- GPA listed if 3.0 or higher
- Honors, awards, or scholarships included if applicable
Experience
- Organization name and location listed
- Job title clearly stated
- Dates of employment included (month and year)
- Bullet points demonstrate: strong action verbs, quantified accomplishments when possible, results or impact of the work, and relevance to the job or career goal
Additional Sections (if applicable)
- Projects with descriptions and results
- Volunteer experience with roles and impact
- Languages listed with proficiency levels
- Leadership or campus involvement
Skills
- Could be technical, software, languages, lab skills, etc.
- Skills are relevant to the job
- Skills are organized into categories (if multiple)
- Skills are specific and descriptive
Format and Layout
- Consistent font throughout the resume
- Uniform margins
- Balanced white space
- Clear section headings
- Bullet points used for experience descriptions
- Resume is one page (for undergraduate students)
- No grammatical or spelling errors
Final Review
- Professional overall appearance
- Logical flow and organization
- Clear and concise language
- No personal pronouns (e.g.: “I”, “my”)
- Consistent verb tense: present tense for current roles, past tense for previous roles
