Work Authorizations

An important part of your internship or job search, whether it is unpaid or paid, on or off campus, is to understand the immigration requirements and policies regarding your visa type.  If you are considering any type of employment in the U.S., consult with the Office of International Services (OIS).

There are several work authorizations available to international students. Links are provided here to detailed information about each option. You are advised to review this information before you begin your search. You need to be knowledgeable about your visa requirements so you can articulate your status during the job or internship search process.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) – A type of work authorization for students in F-1 status. Must apply each semester you engage in off-campus employment.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) – A type of work authorization for students in F-1 status that students must apply for to receive authorization to engage in temporary employment in their field of study for up to 12 months anywhere in the U.S.

OPT STEM Extension – A type of work authorization for F-1 students who completed a degree in certain science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) fields and are currently on post-completion OPT may be eligible to apply for a STEM OPT Extension.  This OPT extension period is for 24 months beginning the day after post-completion OPT EAD expires.

Academic Training (AT) – A type of work authorization available to international students in J-1 status who wish to work off campus.

For all types, apply early! CPT and Academic Training take 3-4 weeks to approve, and OPT can take 2-3 months.

Please note: Before working in the U.S., all students must first obtain a U.S. social security number for employment and taxation purposes. Consult with OIS on how to apply for a social security card.
